Community Partnership Program

“Any child with a will to play soccer, the most popular team sport in the world, should be able to do so regardless of socio-economic status.” -Virginia Legacy Soccer Club

The Community Partnership Scholarship Fund was created in 2003 to make soccer more inclusive in our community.  Originally funded solely through private sources, currently more than 400 children participate in clinics, camps & after-school activities, and in the local recreational league.

Please consider a tax deductible contribution to the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club Community Partnership to support our existing recreational activities, and will also help fund the costs of participation in travel soccer for those individuals who have the talent and desire to do so.

Several of our Community Partnership players have gone on to become valuable travel soccer participants, including several players that are currently playing soccer in college.

The average cost per year of playing on a travel soccer team can exceed a thousand dollars per soccer season.  Your contribution will help us provide an opportunity for every child whose family cannot afford this wonderful experience.

The Virginia Legacy SC Community partnership (formerly the Williamsburg SC Community Partnership) has recently expanded to all nine (9) elementary schools this past year! (2011). The growth and expansion has been made possible by a grant from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation.

Beginning February 2006, VLSC organized a 1st and 2nd grade team at James River Elementary, our original partner school, and DJ Montague. With the help of additional monies from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation, the Williamsburg Community Trust and private sources, the club has continued to expand. In 2012, as in 2011, the community partnership is in 8 of the 9 elementary schools, with a total of 16 teams of 15 players per team participating!

The teams practice once a week, under the tutelage of a staff supervisor and students from the College of William and Mary. Al Albert, along with several other volunteers from the soccer club, helped the college students and school staff run practices and games smoothly. Afterschool transportation is being coordinated with the regular SHIP afterschool busses and each school team plays their games in the recreational soccer program.  VLSC also supports the fall SHIP soccer clubs that involve a similar number of children. There is some overlap, but essentially we are now supporting afterschool soccer for over 400 children in the Williamsburg community!

Over the past few years, Virginia Legacy has had pretty consistent success securing corporate sponsors, and grants to provide the players with socks, shorts, shoes and shin guards.

The VLSC Community Partnership is also charter member of the Urban Soccer Collaborative. This organization includes many of the top organizations serving inner-city youth, and it is a terrific organization for the advancement of soccer in this country and also to serve underserved communities.
