Hunter Embry wins David Pickeral Memorial Scholarship

This year the Virginia Leagacy’s David Pickeral Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Hunter Embry, who graduated from Bruton High School in June.  He will attend the College of William & Mary. Hunter plans to major in biology and kniesiology.

The scholarship is a memorial to David Pickeral the son of Dennis & Robyn Pickeral played with the Club.  “Dave Pickeral was a great kid, a dedicated player and a true teammate. He had a massive love for the game we all play and enjoy.”  David’s passing occurred on November 5, 2005, as a result of an injury he suffered during a soccer match which caused a heart arrhythmia.  As well as our soccer club David was also a member of the Soccer Team at Bethel High School.

Each year a $1,000 scholarship is awarded in David's name to a Virginia Legacy Soccer Club senior intending to continue their studies at college. The applicant may be male or female. The Board of Directors oversees the application process. A review committee awards the scholarship based upon the applicant’s academics, participation in club and community and an essay required with the application. The funds awarded must go towards tuition, fees, housing or books.

During his time at Bruton Hunter achieved a 4.54 grade point average.  In addition to being the captain of the high school soccer team he was also a member of the Bruton track team.  As a soccer player he was selected as a Second Team All-Region VHSL player.
