Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and don’t make any plans, because on May 10th, Legacy 76 will be making area history by competing in the U.S. Open Cup [The USOC]. The Lamar Hunt United States Open Cup [its official name] is the longest standing national soccer tournament and the 3rd longest open tournament in the world. This year, May 10th 2017, Legacy 76 will play against the Carolina Dynamo (PDL) in Greensboro, NC.
The USOC this year has 99 teams competing nationally. Since this last fall, regional teams have been qualifying to enter the first round and compete against teams from the NPSL and USL PDL. Legacy’s performance in 2016, finishing 2nd in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference and going deep into the NPSL playoffs, has landed the squad with an automatic berth into the first round of the USOC. Later, in the second and third rounds of the USOC, enter teams from the USL, NASL, and the MLS. The most recent winners of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open cup were FC Dallas [MLS].
The modern era of the USOC came about in 1996 when US Soccer began entering the MLS into the later rounds. Since the introduction of the MLS into the USOC, only once has there been a lower tiered winner. In 1999, 2nd Division [NASL] team, Rochester Rhinos beat the Colorado Rapids 2-0 in the Open Cup Finals.
For fans of the FA Cup in England, and watching the small unknown clubs take on the giants of the world like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea should remind everyone just how monumental this opportunity can be for the teams involved. Legacy 76 will not be playing D.C. United or the New York Red Bulls in the first round, but every story has it’s beginning. The mere invitation to compete in this unique tournament and be promoted alongside the stars of this nation brings our club a prestigious moniker.
Legacy 76 has been very busy pulling in commitments for the 2017. The roster and signings will be announced as they are finalized, but from the looks of things, 2017 has all the makings to be the most exciting season to date.
